Creation & Geology
Explore the rocks, ridges, structures, and erosional features of the Appalachians through the biblical framework that guides Canyon Ministries.
Mountains Shaped by Catastrophe
The Appalachians preserve dramatic evidence of deformation, uplift, erosion, and large-scale earth processes. Canyon Ministries interprets that history within a recent biblical creation and global Genesis Flood framework.
Rather than treating the mountains as the product of vast ages, our teaching emphasizes catastrophic processes capable of reshaping enormous regions rapidly. Folded rock, altered rock, broad erosional surfaces, deeply cut valleys, and transported sediments all become part of a larger conversation about the Flood and its aftermath.

At a roadcut or exposed streambank, take time to observe how the rock layers are arranged. Notice whether they lie flat, tilt at an angle, bend into folds, or have been broken and displaced by fractures and faults. Look closely at how streams and flowing water interact with these formations, sometimes following natural weaknesses in the rock and other times cutting directly across them. These relationships can reveal important clues about the forces that shaped the landscape, the movement and deformation of the rocks, and the processes of erosion that followed. Understanding how the layers fit together often tells a far more complete geological story than examining an isolated rock sample.

The Appalachians and the Global Flood
For readers who want to go beyond the overview presented on a tour, Canyon Ministries has a longer educational article of Appalachian geology within a biblical Flood model. It discusses continental relationships, tectonic activity, mountain-building, deformation, uplift, and erosion in more depth.
